Blue Carbon Natural Offsets
Mangrove, seagrass, and tidal marsh ecosystems can mitigate climate change by naturally sequestering carbon from water and air and storing it as blue carbon. Focusing on mangroves, KAUST is fine-tuning survey and remote sensing tools to better understand carbon sequestration in mangroves, benefiting these tropical and subtropical ecosystems worldwide.
Mangroves absorb more carbon than any other marine or terrestrial ecosystem, including rainforests.
Mangroves’ function as long-term carbon sinks is imperilled by climate change.
