Returning Carbon to the Ground
As part of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to make its energy sector more sustainable and reach net zero by 2060, KAUST researchers are working with Saudi Aramco to safely store CO2 in geologic formations. KAUST is adapting this proven technology to the geological composition found in Saudi Arabia, carefully assessing the suitability and capacity of various rock formations. Our work will establish a roadmap for the region and potentially beyond.
Tens of million tons of CO2 per year can be secured.
Over 75% of total CO2 emissions from stationary industrial facilities in Saudi Arabia can be stored this way.
